Albert “Al” H. Dietz, 90, of Cheyenne, passed away February 19, 2015 at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center after a valiant struggle fighting cancer.
Al was born December 3, 1924 in Larimer County, Colorado, a son of the late Frederick Jacob and Anna (Boxberger) Dietz. He attended schools in Fort Collins, Colorado area, including the Boxelder School east of Fort Collins.
Before his marriage, Al worked in various fields. His first job was at the Dreher Pickle Factory, followed by work as a roustabout in the oil field. He worked on the family wheat farm, and then a number of years at the CSU printing shop.
Al married Ruth Strecker in June 1949 in Milberger, Kansas.
He served in the Colorado National Guard for a number of years until 1951 when he moved to Kansas to work as a clerk for an oil company in the Bemis Hills oil fields. In 1953 the family moved back to Fort Collins after a 6 month stay in the Pacific Northwest, where Al worked in a plywood factory. Back in Fort Collins, he and his brother, Vern, operated an automobile service station for about 2 years on North College Avenue. After that, he worked for over 30 years for Ideal Cement Company in LaPorte, Colorado, now known as Holcium, first as a mechanic and then as a heavy equipment operator. He retired from Holcium some 20 years ago.
He loved gardening and became quite proficient at raising Koi. He was an avid sports fan, especially liking the Colorado Rockies, Denver Broncos, St. Louis Cardinals and the Colorado Avalanche.
Al and his wife Ruth moved to Cheyenne in 2009. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He leaves behind his wife Ruth of 65 years, of Cheyenne, Wyoming; three daughters, Janeen Sivon of Fort Collins, Colorado; Meredith Mangerson of Loveland, Colorado; Karen McWilliams of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; a son, Kevin Dietz of Cheyenne, Wyoming; five grandchildren, Noelle Sivon of Alma, Colorado; Brittany Palmer of Windsor, Colorado; Jesse Walker of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Shauna McWilliams of Lakewood, Colorado; Dustin McWilliams of Boulder, Colorado; three great grandchildren, Madison and Sivon Palmer, Annabelle Walker and one impending great grandchild, family friend, Betsy Steele, who is thought of as a daughter, Santa Cruz, California; two brothers, Arthur Dietz, Frisco, Texas and Vernon Dietz of Tucson, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, F.J. and Anna Dietz, sisters, Linda Watso, Clara Dietz, Leona Dietz, brothers, Paul, Herman, Leo and Leroy “Lee” Dietz.
A Service of Celebration will be scheduled for a later date.
Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel.
